Hands Across Long Island, Inc. (HALI) is a grassroots peer community founded in 1988 by psychiatric survivors supporting each other as peers in a local diner.   Our first office was on the grounds of Kings Park State Psychiatric Center, and HALI staff was instrumental in the formation of the first supported housing programs on Long Island.  HALI became a leader in statewide mental health advocacy and remains the only peer-run mental health agency on Long Island.  Our unique self-directed, peer-led services support people who want something that goes beyond the traditional behavioral health system.  HALI works with the expectation people can - and do - recover.

We value efforts where those who benefit have the chance to shape their own path to self-determination, and we help them create their own opportunities where barriers often exist.

HALI’s unique Mobile Shower Unit engages people without stable housing in the community to provide clean clothing, and a comfortable respite to get refreshed and clean.

HALI means the world to me.  HALI has given me a reason to live.  The staff at HALI are amazing.  They truly care about people with mental health issues and have given me a safe place to be.  I'm 4 years sober, and very proud of myself.  HALI never judges, they always listen and give you the tools to be a better me.  They also helped me with housing.  I thank everyone who works for HALI!
